The Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) and the Black College Golf Coaches Association (BCGCA) revealed their inaugural BCGCA Awards where Howard University saw four Bison recognized for their outstanding performances during the 2023-24 campaign. The announcement came Friday (Aug. 9).
Howard Director of Golf Sam Puryear and Bison standout Kendall Jackson (Pearland, Texas) highlighted the slate, earning HBCU Coach of the Year and Player of the Year, respectively.
Last season, Puryear led the Bison to nine top 3 team finishes, including four tourney victories. After the regular season, three Bison earned All-NEC honors under his tutelage.
For Jackson, a two-time All-NEC First Team selection, she averaged a team-best 74.5 strokes per round with seven top 10 finishes a year ago. In June, the sports management major made the College Sports Communicators (CSC) All-District Team after producing a 3.64 grade point average (GPA).
Jackson also secured a spot on the HBCU All-America Team, alongside Bison teammates Morgan Horrell(Dallas) and Emily Mayne (Kingston, Jamaica).
A year ago, Horrell was selected to the All-NEC First Team while Mayne took home NEC (Northeast Conference) Rookie of the Year. The Jamaica native was also named to the HBCU All-Freshman Team.
The awards honored student-athletes and coaches attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU).
On Sept. 9-11, Howard travels to Grand Haven, Mich., for the annual Folds of Honor Collegiate, hosted by Michigan State University and Florida State University. The three-day event is live on the Golf Channel.
